Abstract
“The Promise” reviews how and why political elites promise that immigration will be a solution to demographic and economic difficulties that compromise Scotland’s status as a nation. Three key areas in which Scottish and UK interests differ and where immigration is presented as a benefit to Scottish interests are population growth, economic growth, and support for social services, like health care, housing, and education. The chapter reveals little evidence that the migrant presence detracts from native-born citizens’ wages, employment opportunities, or social services. Instead, migrants rejuvenate local communities and attract services. Much of the Scottish campaign to justify and endorse immigration focuses on dispelling myths about the effect of migration on the labour market and demonstrating that immigration is beneficial to the Scottish economy and Scottish workers. Migration is presented to the Scottish people as a win-win solution.
