Reed, Assistant District Deputy G.M. dies at 102 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS PARIS Antoine Pinay, a former premier who played a central role in the reconstruction of France after World War II, has died at age 102. Born near Lyon on Dec. 30, 1891, he earned the Croix de Guerre for his service in World War I. He aided the Resistance while mayor of Saint-Chamond during World War II, was elected to the National Assembly in 1946, and in the 1950s served in a variety of Cabinet posts.

From March to December in 1952, he headed the government, helping bring inflation under control for the first time since the war ended. He resigned after losing his parliamentary majority, but returned to the Cabinet in 1955-56 as foreign minister. In 1958, he helped bring about Gen. Charles de Gaulle's return to power, and served as his finance minister for two years. Before leaving government in 1960, he helped revive the French economy with rigorous monetary policies, including the introduction of the "new" franc that was worth 100 of its predecessors.

He died Tuesday in his home in Saint-Chamond in central France. He is survived by two daughters. Conservative Chinese leader Yao Yilin dies THE ASSOCIATED PRESS BEIJING Yao Yilin, a former vice premier and a conservative economist who helped launch China's market-oriented reforms, died Sunday at age 77, the official Xinhua News Agency has announced. The official obituary described Mr. Yao as "an outstanding proletarian revolutionary and eminent economic planner" and said, "Yao's death is a great loss to the party and the country." The conservative economic planner was associated with China's periods of economic retrenchment since it embarked on marke economic reforms in 1979. He was a prominent figure in 1989, when reforms were rolled back after the military crackdown on the Tiananmen Square democracy movement. He worked closely with Premier Li Peng, whom he had mentored and who also is an economic conservative, but reportedly was forced to resign in 1992 for being too narrowminded.

Born in 1 1917 in the poor east province of Anhui, Mr. Yao joined the Communist Party in 1935 and was a student activist at Beijing's Qinghua University, the nation's top technical school. During the 1937-1945 war against Japan, he served as a regional party official. After the Communist takeover in 1949, he worked in the trade ministry and was named minister of commerce in 1960. He was purged during the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution, but recovered his former post in 1978.

The following year, he was named vice premier. DAVIS OUR DAILY BREAD The Rev. A.P. Bailey eople in places of high position often advice make they receive decisions from based some- on one they trust. Someone is said to have this person's ear.

I saw a good example recently. At the corner of a busy downtown intersection a man was working quietly at the foot of a telephone pole. He seemed to know by instinct what his fellow worker wanted at the top of the high pole. He would send up tools, pieces of wire and other apparatus regularly. How could he be sure of what his colleague wanted? When I noticed closely 1 I saw the man on the ground with a little instrument clamped on his ear.

His friend at the top of the pole had his ear. If we are to be faithful disciples of the Master, one thing is sure. He must have our ear daily. There must be communication through listening prayer. He spoke to them in a parable to show that they should keep on praying and never lose heart.
